Caldecott and Newbery countdown
I love to sit (or lay or stand) and ponder which lucky, talented authors/illustrators will receive the great honor of these prestigious awards! I would be plumb flabbergasted if Mr. Brian Selznick did not win for WONDERSTUCK. Such a masterpiece created to elude space and time with his masterful use of charcoal images and descriptive spellbinding narrative. Obviously, I myself am wonderstruck by this book. The waiting list at school has been long as I could not help but crack it open and share the magic this book exudes....aaaaaah. To have two perspectives intertwined....one of a young boy who has experienced recent tragedy through the loss of his mother and the life they comfortably shared. Another story, not told with text but solely images, revealing the sad life of a young deaf girl many decades prior to the boy's story. I won't share anymore other than this recommendation to read it to find out how these two stories unfold. Go Brian! You deserve another Caldecott AND I will go so far as to say you might as well take the Newbery too....would be a first in history but well deserved!
